ICT-Based Learning for Teaching Business Ethics
Using Case Studies in Indonesia

Sanata Dharma University (USD) is one of the Jesuit universities in the world, which has a vision of educating the younger generation to have academic excellence and human values (intelligent and humanist) for the realization of an increasingly dignified society.

Thank you to the Leaders of the International Association of Jesuit Business Schools for giving our team the opportunity to participate in the Inspirational Paradigm for Jesuit Business Education project. Our project title is ICT-Based Learning for Teaching Business Ethics Using Case Studies in Indonesia

Corruption had become more rampant in Indonesia and worsened by the increasing number of confirmed cases and death of COVID-19. The country’s Social Affairs Minister has recently been named a suspect in a graft case involving the distribution of COVID-19 social aid. Earlier, the Corruption Eradication Commission probed a graft into a case that had implicated the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister in relation to the ministry’s export policy for lobster larvae being the highly prized commodity. The Covid-19 pandemic can be a trigger for business people to take action to save their business, while, at the same time, it makes them easier to violate the business ethics. Bad business people tend to only prioritize their own interests rather than the interests of society at large. Ethical violation in relation to the excessive sale of lobster larvae here is just one among the many abuses of both business and environmental ethics in Indonesia.

The task of an educational institution is to address the needs in operating good practices in the real world. Mindful of the difficult living conditions at present, what we need is transformative education based on compassion and justice to build a better world. The Ministry of Education of the Republic of Indonesia has recently issued a policy called “Kampus Merdeka” [Freedom Campus] to give a greater authority to the country’s higher education. This reform allows universities across Indonesia to open new study programs and design their own curricula. This is an opportune time to reform business schools in Jesuit institutions like that of Sanata Dharma University to foster positive changes in accordance to “An Inspirational Paradigm for Jesuit Business Education". It is urgent to redesign our business school to help raise students’ awareness of the importance of ethical business amidst today’s business situations which are often corrupt and loaded with ethical dilemmas, hence disabling business people to make ethical business decisions.
Business school students are aspiring entrepreneurs and future leaders in the business world. Unethical business behavior will likely become bad precedent when they enter the real world. Such is the concern of the higher education in Indonesia in general, and Sanata Dharma’s business school in particular. We would like to educate our young people to have strong characters to enable them to make ethical decisions. Accountants, for example, are gatekeepers for business people to work compliant with applicable business ethics principles.

Thus far, explanations of theories are the dominant learning model. More materials in the form of cases that occur in real practice are necessary. Case-based learning has been provided, but not presented attractively as to make them enthusiastic about learning. We need a creative and attractive ICT-based learning model that can teach students how to make ethical business decisions.
Given the above problems, it is important to create an inspirational and dialogical learning model according to the basic values of the Universal Apostolic Preferences in the form of case studies that are close to reality. Attractive, ITC-based learning media in the form of software will make students enthusiastic about learning so that learning objectives can be achieved. An interactive learning model that incorporates a dialogical atmosphere through the use of information technology will make students motivated and eager to learn.

The learning model proposed is of e-learning type that can be accessed by anyone, anytime and anywhere. This learning model best supports students to study independently. Ignatian Pedagogy it the approach we use to emphasizee the learning process via context, experience, reflection, action, and evaluation. The learning model can be operated in English to be used worldwide, especially by students of AIJBS.

Students are firstly given a video related to violations of business ethics. Next, students are asked to choose various alternative answers by assuming that if they become actors in the case what will be the respective consequences. Each choice has a corollary consequence. At the end of the lesson a video will be inserted containing various opinions and insights from experts and celebrities (to spark the interests of the millennials) on the importance of ethics in business. In his views of education today, Father Arturo Sosa, S.J. claimed that educational models today need to prepare young people for the future. Thus, instead of getting stuck to the outdated models, what we need is renewal coupled with discernment to suit the interest of the young generation.
The results obtained from this project are that we can create a website with the contents of actual cases in Indonesia that have been processed so that they can be used as learning materials for students studying business ethics. In this case, problems and solutions are raised from competent experts. Lecturers can add new cases all the time, so that learning cases are getting more and more, and getting updated. This website serves as a depository box for various cases. Lecturers can continually add on new cases at any time to increase the teaching materials. This means that the results of this grant are very flexible in adding cases, case questions, solutions from competent experts and case-making lecturers. Therefore, this e-learning can be useful for long-term use in accordance with the times.
